In a nutshell: a house with huge potential to fall in love with!
Perched on a hilltop and surrounded by whimsical stone windmills, the medieval town of Montuiri provides a prime example of traditional rural Mallorca. Located 30 kilometres east of Palma in the centre of the island on the main road from Palma to Manacor, it also lends its name to the small municipality that surrounds it.
Montuïri is one of the oldest villages in Mallorca. Under the Arabs, it formed one of the twelve districts into which what was then Mayurqa was divided.
Montuïri, like the rest of the island, fell under the land division plan (Llibre de Repartiment of 1232) after the Catalan conquest, according to which the conquering king Jaume I parceled out the land and gave it to his noblemen and loyal knights.
In 1300, Jaume II granted the town its own rights and a first rectangular town centre was designed, adjoining the mill district. The eight mills of Molinar, which are still preserved today, have left their mark on the profile of the village. Their stone towers, which used the wind as a source of energy, are a living testimony to a past dependent on nature and the land.
Over the centuries, new squares and roads have been added, but the medieval structure has been clearly preserved to this day.
The island's years of crisis in the 14th and 15th centuries did not leave Montuïri unscathed. Later, in the 18th century, a devastating drought and plague caused another population decline.
Under the Franco regime, the cultural and political dynamism of the Republican era disappeared and the national Catholicism of the post-war period made the church the dominant element in the social and cultural life of the municipality.
For the past 12 years, the Fira de sa Perdiu, literally partridge fair, has been celebrated in Montuïri on the first Sunday of December. An exhibition of partridges and a competition with them as decoys in the hunt are among the events of the fair. Otherwise, you can buy typical local products, visit the animal show with sheep, goats, horses and dogs and art and craft exhibitions.
